Arthritis Treatment For Dogs

By Nicky Takasura

Over 12 million dogs are adversely affected by joint pain and mobility problems annually. Your wonderful, loving pet may be slowing down a bit, and it's natural to assume that age is the cause. Anything more than a gradual decline in activity, or your pet's diminishing interest in physical activity, may be signs that she has a more serious condition affecting the joints, known as arthritis. Yes, dogs get arthritis, too. Pain relief for dogs with arthritis is one way to mitigate this condition, but it is not the only answer. Life long treatment for arthritis is required.

Arthritis affects the joints. The most common joints where pets get arthritis is in the hips, knees and ankles. Cartilage is a protective cushion between the bones in the joints that allows ease of movement. In arthritic conditions, when the cartilage begins to deteriorate, the bones start rubbing together, causing growing discomfort, stiffness, pain and, if left untreated, can result in lameness. There are a number of treatments that will impede the deterioration of the cartilage, allowing more freedom of movement for your pet, and reduce her stiffness.

In the absence of a dialog with your pet, your observance of your pet's behavior is critical to determining whether or not he/she may be suffering from stiffness, lack of mobility or joint pain. Before taking your dog to the veterinarian, see if your dog has any of the following, common symptoms of a possible arthritic condition:

* Reluctance to go up or down stairs

* Avoids jumping up on furniture or into the car

* Lagging behind or tiring easily during walks

* Increased stiffness, particularly after resting

* Wants to lie down rather than sit or stand

* Favors one limb over others

These are only a few symptoms you may notice in your pet, but there are other, subtle indications in behavior that could also be pointing towards joint pain. Your pet could be sleeping more than usual, gaining weight, being less alert and showing less interest or enthusiasm for play and going for walks. If your dog seems to have symptoms for more than 2 weeks, it is time to take him for an arthritis evaluation by your veterinarian. The best thing you can do for your pet is to get a diagnosis and begin a prescribed arthritis treatment for dogs plan of management.

Your veterinarian may prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), which are a common form of pain medication for dogs. He or she may also recommend over the counter treatments and foods that contain glucosamine and chondroitin and Omega fatty acids. These have all been proven to bring pain relief for dogs. Your dog's weight is an important factor, as extra weight puts a painful strain on already sore joints. A safe weight loss target is fifteen percent of body weight over a period of six months. A reduced calorie diet with high fiber will help your pet lose the extra pounds. And don't feed your dog table scraps and human food. It's not healthy for him and is contributing to his degenerative disease.

Besides prescriptions, supplements and diet, exercise is an essential part of your dog's life. Just because those joints are not as mobile as they once were, does not mean your pet can do without exercise. Low impact activities, like leash walking or swimming, allow for good range of motion on joints and building muscle, without stressing out the joints. Daily exercise is better than 3 times a week of strenuous activity. Depending on how advanced the condition is, your pet may benefit from a slow warm up to get the muscles warmed and the joints moving more freely before taking a brisk walk or slower paced run. Cold, damp weather may intensify the joint stiffness. On those days, you may want to give your dog a muscle warm up indoors before proceeding outside for exercise. You might also consider a pet sweater that covers the affected joints and keeps the muscles warmer.

Your veterinarian may prescribe massage or physical therapy, which have proven to be very beneficial therapies in pain relief for dogs, as part of your dog's treatment. The veterinary staff will show you how to massage and perform physical therapy to relax your dog's stiff muscles and promote a better range of motion in the joints. When beginning this type of therapy, remember to take it slowly; you need to build trust with your pet. You can start by petting him around and on the area where you intend to work. You will gently work up to kneading the muscles around the joint, using your fingertips in a small, circular motion. Gradually work your way out to the surrounding muscles. At all times, massage and physical therapy should be done in a warm, relaxed and safe environment. Make this experience as comfortable as possible for both you and your dog.

Overall, you want to work closely with your veterinarian to manage your dog's arthritic condition. Your goal is to provide the best treatment and supportive lifestyle that will decrease the degeneration of the cartilage between joints, alleviate joint pain, and keep your pet as healthy as possible. Remember, arthritis doesn't go away, but effective, managed arthritis treatment for dogs can ensure that you will both enjoy the coming years together. - 29956

Knowing the Right Funeral Home In Fort Worth TX For You

By Henry Thompson III

There are actually, a few times in ones life when choosing the right funeral home is imperative and can greatly assist mourners if done early. The buyer can make the most and the biggest decisions before the day of using those purchases arrives. Hopefully, these decisions can be made long before the day of ones eventual demise. More time can be spent in consideration of color selection, swatches, music, arrangements, burial and viewing options and a tentative list of orators, singers and/or musicians and clergy members.

Ones first consideration is the reputation of a possible funeral home. Are they reputable, fair, honest and caring? How long have they been in business? Are they kind and soft-spoken? How do they handle clients with no money? What do older citizens say about the different funeral homes? Have there been any crimes committed, as reported by the local newspaper? If one were to Google a certain funeral home, what would come up? Hopefully, the homes business information comes up and not much more, unless some of its employees are otherwise remarkable people.

A second consideration is pricing, which could be a real challenge to get. Will funeral homes have literature that they are willing to send out, or does one have to sit in meeting with a mortician to put a package together? Worse yet, does one have to take a tour of the local funeral home to pick out a casket? If this is distasteful, then perhaps it can be handled in a different manner? Perhaps, one could choose a casket color and shell material (metals, woods, plastics) and the interior material (polyester, linen, silk) and a pillow?

After a funeral home is selected to work with and final vessel selections have ended, financing will be your final decision. Can arrangements be made? How much for how long at what percentage rate? Is the financing insured? Now, is the time to find out the relationship between life insurance and funerary arrangements. For certain, it is better to find out now than at the time of the end. This can be a tricky area, so it is better understood as early as possible.

The final step once all signatures are in place, every envelope is sealed and every contract is signed is to let one or more Significant Others know where these documents are and what you wishes were, for this painful period of time. One might want to take the time to answer any questions or issues that any family member may have. - 29956

Jewelry Making Tips How to Use a Ring Stick

By Peter Walters

Knowing your Jewelry Making Tools and Their Proper Usage will not only save you time, but will raise your profit as you'll be able to work faster. The more that you become familiar with the tools of the trade the better you'll become.

Have you attempted weaving a bead ring? Getting the right ring size is a challenge if you have tried. You can adjust the size of the ring band by adding beads or reducing beads on the band part of the ring. Bear in mind, there are still tiny variations in size that when taken all together will affect the size of the band you are weaving even if they seem like the same size in your eyes.

Are you having difficulties getting your preferred band size? It's quite annoying, isn't it? But you can avoid this type of difficulty with help from a Ring stick.

It is a stick, as the name suggest, that's slender at the top and gets gradually wider going down the stick. The size of the ring is determined through which part of the stick it stopped when you put it in the stick. The ring size is the same as the size of the width of the stick.

This is significant when you are weaving a ring because you need to figure out the size of the ring band before you ultimately finish the band. If you had at first connected the band to the other side of the ring, next thing you need to do is to put the ring on the ring stick to check its size.

If there isn't any difficulty with the size of the ring, you have nothing more to do than to finish the band. However, if the size is too large, attempt to disconnect the band and scale back the number of beads in the pattern. You must disconnect the band and increase the pattern to increase its size if it is too tiny.

You can see the great use of a ring stick in saving your time while weaving a ring band. It is strongly recommended to employ a wooden ring stick instead of the metal one. The latter may cause scratches over the crystal beads.

As with all tools that you use it's vital to be safe when working with them and learning some basic Safety Tips in Jewelry Making is important to make sure that you don't hurt yourself or accidentally harm somebody else. This is not only for when you are using high temperature torches when making handmade glass beads, but all tools in the wrong hands or used improperly can be deadly.

When you have finished working for the day ensure that you place your tools in a secure place, this will also make sure that when you start work the next day they're straightforward to find. There's nothing more maddening than having to delay work because you have misplaced a tool. - 29956

Garage Sealing is an Investment, but Tough Work

By Angie Meza

Let's face it, the garage is not one of the most romantic rooms in our home. We spend very little, if any time in there and it's normally when we are running from the car to the fridge with groceries or throwing something in the corner for storage. In the summer months, it can be very hot in there and we just can't wait to get out.

If we let our garage get into a general state of disrepair, it can have a significantly adverse affect on the overall value of our home. After a period of time it becomes very difficult to even see the floor, let alone clean it and there can be quite a mess. To look after it as much as you can, garage sealing could be a great investment for you.

Be prepared when you set out to undertake garage sealing as it is not a relatively easy task. To start off with you will have to remove everything from the room and ensure that it is not going to rain for a period of time as you will almost always have to resort to temporary storage on your driveway.

Even though garage sealing will do a lot for those annoying problems of concrete dust, spills, oil stains, road salt and general street residue, you must be prepared for a major task. While your home's value will be increased, there are other ways which are less costly and take less effort.

Before you start garage sealing, you will need to scrub the floor with concrete cleaners and degreasers, using a high-pressure hose as well. This can be backbreaking work as you may have to treat some areas several times before you are satisfied.

You will need to allocate at least one day to the preparation of your room before you start garage sealing. This will enable you to get rid of all the pre-existing stains, including stubborn ones and to let the area dry in preparation for the next stage.

Note that during garage sealing, the product will stain any surface that comes up against. Use a paint roller and protect the walls with paper and tape. Work from the back of the room to the front and make sure that the edges are clean, especially when it comes to the threshold with the driveway.

Absorbent pads can be placed beneath the vehicles you park inside to absorb any nasty stains, fluids or other leaks that would otherwise make a mess on the floor. This can be a significantly easier alternative than going through the process of garage sealing, especially if you are somewhat frail. - 29956

All About Infant Carseat Safety

By Simon Burke

Infant carseat safety has come a long way in a few decades. Many of us grew up in a time where Sundays were meant for long drives and when it came time to buckle up the kids, well, that just didn't happen. Kids were allowed to jump all over the car, hang out the window, and ride in the back of pickup trucks. All quite legally, too. Even infants didn't need special restraints. Mom could hold a baby in her arms, or even place him on a seat cushion. No problem! It's a wonder we survived.

Early versions of the carseat allowed it to be placed anywhere, and there were no laws mandating its use. Fast forward to today and parents are fined and ticketed if they are caught with infants and children in the car without proper restraints. No trip is too short to get a ticket if you don't have your child in a safe carseat. These new models take comfort and body design into account, alleviating all possibility of whiplash and other injuries in even severe crashes.

These seats must be placed in the back seat, facing backwards, so that the driver of the car has fast and easy access to the baby in case of an emergency. This will help prevent neck injuries and whiplash in the event of a collision.

Carseats grow as an infant grows. There are car seats designed for newborns, who aren't even allowed to get into a car to go home until a nurse has seen the car seat and checked to make sure it has been properly installed.

As infants grow, so do carseats. Usually around six months parents will need to purchase a newer one, more suitable for growing legs. This one will have a more defined head rest as well as larger straps to accommodate a growing body. These larger ones are designed to provide a snug but comfy fit for the baby.

Some of the more expensive styles can convert to serve other purposes. They have optional attachments that can turn them into strollers, rocking chairs, and carryalls. The attachments can be added later on, instead, if that's more budget friendly. - 29956

Gestational Diabetes

By Moses Wright

When a pregnant woman develops diabetes, this is known as gestational diabetes. Unlike pre-existing diabetes, the pregnant woman who develops gestational diabetes did not have diabetes prior to the pregnancy.

About four percent of pregnancies are affected by gestational diabetes. The hormone that encourages the growth of the fetus is suspected as a cause of gestational diabetes since it inhibits the mother's ability to metabolize glucose.

Birth defects are not a risk of gestational diabetes since gestational diabetes occurs late in the pregnancy. Since gestational diabetes increases the baby's size, the baby may be at increased risk of injury during birth.

If a pregnant woman has gestational diabetes, the newborn may be at an increased risk for breathing problems. Newborns of women with gestational diabetes may also have low blood glucose levels at birth. People whose mothers had gestational diabetes during the pregnancy may be prone to obesity and type II diabetes.

Timed blood tests and consuming a glucose solution are part of testing for gestational diabetes. Typically, blood sample is drawn at the beginning of the test and one hour after the pregnant woman drinks a glucose solution. More blood tests after longer periods of time may also be done.

Gestational diabetes is treated with a diabetic diet. A pregnant woman with gestational diabetes may need to meet with a dietitian who will create a diabetic diet for the pregnant woman to follow.

The diabetic diet typically includes three meals and two snacks each day. The diet usually specifies how many servings of each food group should be eaten with each meal and snack. The dietician may provide a food exchange list that includes suggestions and serving sizes for each food group.

Checking blood sugar levels is an important part of managing gestational diabetes. The woman may be required to check her blood sugar levels multiple times a day and report the readings to the doctor's office. If the gestational diabetes is not well managed, the pregnant woman may need to start taking insulin by injection.

The newborn and mother do not usually have diabetes after birth. Women who have had gestational diabetes have an increased risk of type II diabetes. When the gestational diabetes is managed properly, the lasting effects are minimal. - 29956

Martin Johnson Adventures

By Jacek Prague

There were no lights and fans-the engine wouldn't work-nothing worked! No ship ever went to sea with more things wrong with her. And so the unfortunate vessel creaked and groaned its way across the Pacific toward Hawaii, the sport of every wave.

The size of the galley was negligible. It would have been considered small for a clothes closet. Martin said that here the old saw about having to go outside to turn around was literally true-if he had a dish in his hand.

On Monday, May 20, 1907, the Snark, after skirting disaster for twenty-seven days, dropped anchor in Pearl Harbor and furled her sails. It seemed a paradise to those six sea-weary souls. It was so good to be on solid ground again. According to the newspapers, the Snark had been given up as lost and reported gone down with all hands on board.

Martin could hardly walk. The land tilted just like the ship, and for days he would find himself spreading his feet apart to keep from falling.

They had bad weather from the start, mounting to the proportions of heavy storms. The light boat pitched like a cork. It leaked like the proverbial sieve. The sides leaked, the bottom leaked; water poured in, ruining the tools in the engine room and spoiling a good part of three months' provisions. The coal had been delivered in rotten potato sacks and was washing through the scuppers into the sea. The floors of the galley and cabins were ankle-deep in water.

In many, many years no vessel had ever attempted to cross the Pacific by this treacherous and isolated route. Some had tried it but had been blown far off their course. Others had never been heard from again. But the Snark and her crew accomplished the impossible, and in sixty-one days out of Hilo, Hawaii, they put safely into Taiohae Bay, in the Marquesas.

Of course, all were desperately seasick. Tochigi lay in his bunk most of the time as if paralyzed; Martin made for his at every opportunity.

Martin was advanced to engineer and was beside himself with pride. He had learned all the idiosyncrasies of the seventy-horse-power engine and was undoubtedly worthy of the promotion, but I suspect that Jack did it to get a new cook. Martin wrote to Jess Utz, his cooking teacher, "I guess, Jess, my cooking wasn't so much of a success-they've hired someone else."

With these as a crew, the refurbished Snark sailed out of Honolulu, stopping at Hilo and the leper island of Molokai, and on October 7, 1907, cast off the shore lines to begin the two-thousand-mile sail across - 29956

What Should You Put on Your Hurricane Preparation Checklist?

By Angie Meza

When the month of June rolls around, many millions of people who live in vulnerable areas around the United States hold their breath at the start of storm season. News organizations tell them that they should compile hurricane preparation checklists and warn everyone not to be complacent, even if recent seasons have been somewhat tame.

A significant portion of the US population lives in potentially dangerous areas, known to have been affected by tropical cyclones in the past. If you live within the state of Florida in total, or anywhere on the Atlantic seaboard on near to the Gulf of Mexico you should be getting hurricane preparation checklists together.

Depending on exactly where you live within the affected states, hurricane preparation checklists can take on a different look. For example, if you live in Miami Beach you're very vulnerable to the worst effects, while if you live in the city of Dallas, you are unlikely to receive the worst effects of the bad cyclones as you are someway inland.

Many people say that they will make the ultimate plans depending on the actual threat caused by a storm, its strength and so on. Remember that your family is your main concern when you are getting your hurricane preparation checklist together. Know what evacuation routes are available to you and get in touch with family or friends who live in safer locations well ahead of time to prepare.

Bad storms will bring with them serious weather. As your home is your most valuable asset you must make sure that if protection is included within your hurricane preparation checklist, whether you were going to be inside when the storm hits or not. Get ready to take anything that could be blown around inside your garage, fix any loose items on your roof and trim back your branches now.

Hurricane preparation checklists include a list of disaster supplies. Flashlights and batteries, battery operated radios and first aid kits are essential. You need at least a gallon of water per person per day and a lot of nonperishable foods, preferably those that you can eat without further cooking.

As you home can be very vulnerable to wind driven rain, you should stock up on hurricane socks at the beginning of the season. These are great inventions as they can be manipulated to fit snugly against all windows and doors, facing the direction of the storm's approach. Don't underestimate the force of wind driven rain and even mild flooding. These socks will absorb the moisture as it comes in and save your carpet and other valuables.

We will always have a lot of notice about hurricanes as our weather forecasting system is first class. The hurricane preparation checklist should include a timeline so that you know what to do and how far in advance that you need to do it. - 29956

Basic Kinds Of Stopwatches Used For Sporting Activities

By Luke Jefferson

Basically, a stopwatch is a hand held device that measures time and it is most often used for sports and exercise programs. People can use them as timers if they have to oversee an event where duration and length are important. All athletes can benefit from a stopwatch and that regardless of whether it is to be used for races, ball sports or even gymnastics.

The most common type of stopwatch for sports activities happens to be the one used for Track & Field Athletics. A watch of this type has the ability to time up to 1/100th of a second as well as in specific minutes to seconds. Memory functions are also a common feature so that an athlete or trainer can recall lap records and other cumulative lap times. Usage of this is most common in exercises or training regimens.

For the most part watches for running are to be worn on the wrist. This makes them perfect for athletes who do exercising on their own or private training. The majority of models also have programs that do calculations which makes it easier for athletes or coaches to evaluate things like average speed or the time for a certain distance.

Cycling stopwatches are made for athletes who compete in cycling events and enable them to time the average speed for a specific distance. These stopwatches are mostly used by coaches and athletes serious about cycling, because with this stopwatch they can save in the memory a series of segments in split time.

The stopwatch isn't only made for humans. It can also be used to time the speed of animals such as dogs and horses. The equestrian stopwatch is designed for horse racing. Some of these types have large displays for easier reading during practice or exercise sessions. A horse driver can use this stopwatch to gauge the speed and rate during the actual run.

Another type of stopwatch is also used to time in inanimate objects such as cars and motorcycles. It's called the motor sport stopwatch. Some designs offer a lot of features that makes it highly convenient to use such as the any-time data capture button. Other stopwatches of this kind have triple displays to allow for better reading.

Another specific type of stopwatch is the Sailing Watch. This type has added features such as being waterproof as well as a pre-start countdown option. This stopwatch has been specifically designed to be used mainly by sailboat and speedboat racers.

Other watches are also used for educational purposes such as the Scientific Stopwatch and Work Study Stopwatch. These are purely designed for classrooms or research laboratories to clock how much time is needed for any given experiment to produce results.

A stopwatch isn't just designed to clock in high speed and distance measurements. There are also some watches that are designed for outdoor pursuits such as walking and orienteering. There are also training watches that clock in exercise or training hours. These stopwatches ensure that you can have enough rest after a specific time. However, the main use of a stopwatch is certainly for sports activities. - 29956

Of course you do not have to be of Celtic descent to get a Celtic tattoo. The task is to locate the tattoo artist who can do it for you.

Celtic tattoo designs are tough for the tattoo artist so you should seek out a tattoo artist who has the appropriate background in Celtic tattoo designs.

This is perhaps your most reliable verification that the job will be done well. What is require from the tattoo artist is an eye for detail and exact line placement and that is a skill that not all tattoo artists are proficient at.

Design Own Engagement Ring - 3 Things You Must Know

By Jan Rooss

If you want to design your own engagement ring and save a bunch of money on the ring then this article will discuss 3 important aspects of the process.

1. You absolutely must have knowledge about the 4 C's of diamonds. The 4 C's which stands for color, cut, clarity and carat determines how valuable a diamond is. One thing most experts agree on is this. Rather buy a better quality diamond than a bigger one.

The 4 C's determines the quality and value of a diamond and I must admit it is interesting stuff. I can't address everything about the 4 C's in this article but if you scroll down to the bottom of this article you will find a link to my website where I explain it all in detail. The most important part of the 4 C's is the cut. I can tell you right now that whatever you do, don't compromise on the cut and always go for an ideal cut diamond. The quality of the cut is what gives the diamond it's brilliance and sparkle.

2. After you selected the right diamond you will then have to select the setting for the ring. Here you need to know a little more about what your girlfriend likes when it comes to jewelry. Does she like white gold, yellow gold, platinum, solitaire or 3 stone rings?

You need to know these things in order to choose the perfect setting that she will absolutely fall in love with.

3. The final part of designing your own engagement ring is making sure that you buy the right diamond and setting from a reputable company at the right price and the diamond has to be certified. Preferably from the GIA. You can read further about this on my website as well. The GIA stands for "The Gemological Institute Of America" They thoroughly inspect each diamond and rates them according to the 4 C's. They then issue the diamond with a certificate which adds value and reassurance to the buyer.

There are many wholesale diamond retailers online where you can design your own engagement ring and get a great deal on it. I did this and saved about $1500.00

I hope you enjoyed this article and if you keep these 3 things in mind I am confident that you will design her a great engagement ring. - 29956

Rules For Fall Planing Bulbs

By Thomas Fryd

Late summer and early fall weather also is ideal, as a rule, for the planting or transplanting of evergreens. Evergreens are now in a state of semi-quiesence so far as top growth is concerned. Root activity is stimulated by the moisture and lower soil temperatures.

Evergreens planted in early autumn will have plenty of time to get re-established before winter. There are distinct advantages in planting them now. One is that the plants do not have to support new growth now as they would soon after being plant-ed in spring; there is no strain on the roots to support a top that is about to make its greatest growth of the year. Also, as a rule, the weather is more favorable, and reliable in fall than in spring, and there is a longer period of time in which to do the planting. Spring often is an uncertain season in the North. It may be late; it may start early, then fade away in favor of winter; sometimes it is cold and wet all the way with only a few days good for planting evergreens.

To Reduce Winter Injury

The only major risk in fall planting is the possibility of winter injury. This can be reduced to the same minimum expected of spring planting if the planting is done early in the fall, a generous supply of water is given once a week and a thoroughly deep watering is given just before winter.

The beauty which the spring blooming bulbs bring to the garden is the result of plantings done in the fall. Fall is the time to plant hyacinths, crocuses, daffodils and other hardy narcissus, tulips, snowdrops, grape hyacinths and scillas. All of these, except tulips, should go into the ground early so that they will have time enough to produce a good root system before winter soil temperatures put an end to root growth. Early planting is one of the secrets of success with these bulbs. Tulips can be planted much later without involving the risks of winter injury.

Best results are obtained from hardy spring flowering bulbs like the hoya plant when they are planted in fertile, sandy loam soil that is deep enough so that there is at least six inches of good earth under the bulbs. Far too often these bulbs are planted in poor soil and shallow top soil. Although they might flower fairly well the first year, they will do poorly the following years and it won't be long before they run out of flowers or lose out entirely in the annual effort to keep going. Work a complete commercial fertilizer into the soil; mix it in well before planting the bulbs just like what i am doing in my hoya plant. The rule for planting depth is to cover the bulb with earth three times the largest dimension of the bulb.

Tulips do better in the North when planted deep, covering them with six to eight inches of earth. Water them

thoroughly because the soil must be moist to get good root action. A good soaking every ten days in the absence of rain should be adequate. After freezing weather stiffens the top inch or so of earth, cover with six inches of marsh hay for the winter.

Other Things to Plant

Early fall also is the ideal time to plant peonies, mertensia and the biennials (yearlings) such as hollyhocks, foxgloves, Canterbury bells and sweet rocket. Peony and mertensia (Virginia blue bell) roots should be planted so that the uppermost "eyes" (fleshy buds) are covered with two inches of earth. Peonies are especially sensitive to deeper planting; they will not flower when they are too deep in the soil. Mertensias should have at least 12 inches of good soil beneath their roots and peonies do best when they have 18 inches of good earth beneath them. - 29956

Quick Tips for Model Railway Trains

By Peter Westerton

Model railway trains is a surprisingly popular hobby, even today. Maybe it's the fact that model trains can be enjoyed by people of any age that helps them remain such a hit with young and old alike. Whatever the reason, every year more people discover the magic of model trains, despite them being considered by many as an old fashioned toy.

It's a wonder that model trains are still so popular, what with all the games consoles that kids love so much. So how come trains manage to keep their appeal? Maybe it's because they provide a way for children, and grownups, to turn your imagination into something physical.

After all, when you create a model railroad layout, you decide how it runs, which trains ride the tracks, whether there are hills, tunnels, crossing, stations or whatever. And when you've built it, you get to sit back and watch your work in action. That's got to be a good feeling.

And even for an older person, there's a world of opportunity for diving in deeper. These days the level of detail on the model trains is astonishing, they are extremely realistic, much more than they used to be. It's not at all difficult to find yourself spending hours or days on just a small part of your model railway.

At least the manufacturers seem to have standardized on the scales and gauges of model trains. Popular scales these days range from G scale which is fairly large, right down to Z scale which is tiny. There are other scales but they are more specialized. By far the most popular size is HO scale.

It's interesting where all the scale letters came from. H actually stands for half, and the O stands for ordinary or standard, so the HO model trains are half the size of standard model railway trains. Saying that, standard size does differ depending where in the world you are, so I'm not sure if standard is a good name to begin with.

Long gone are the days when model trains were powered by hand. It was quite some time before electrical trains came along. But there's no more winding up any more, everything is electrical now. Many model railway trains are even controlled by computers, just like the full size versions.

I love the fact that collecting model railway trains is a hobby that everyone can enjoy. You can start off as small as you like and build up as much as you like. Your imagination (and your wallet) is the only limit to what you can do. And the reward that you get out of this hobby really does increase with the enthusiasm that you put into it. A complex and detailed railroad layout that takes ages to build will bring with it a huge sense of satisfaction and achievement when it's complete. - 29956

How Fluorescent Light Fixtures Work

By Tom Sanderrs

When you use fluorescent lighting you are conserving energy and the bonus is you help the planet, but there are other benefits from using them instead of incandescent light bulbs. They also do cost more initially but in a short time(3-12months) you will see that they pay for themselves as your electric bill will show an with the newer generation of them the "yellow glow" has been eliminated, don't flicker and light up quickly.

It is important to know how fluorescent lights work and basically they are made up of a glass tube which is sealed with a phosphor powder covering on the inside walls of the glass tube. The tube also has an electrode located on each end and those electrodes have wires that form an electrical circuit. This is then connected to the AC power supply source.

After the fluorescent lamp is turned on, current will flow through the electrical circuit to the pair of electrodes. The electrons will then start to move through the gas from one end of the tube to the other. Some mercury that is inside the tube then turns from its liquid form into its gaseous state. Electrons and ions move along the tube and as they do so crash into gaseous mercury atoms, which in turn leads to an increase of energy for the atoms' electrons. As the electrons return to their original energy level light photons are emitted.

However, that process does not always work as it should and if you experience that happening then the following steps will help you to find the problem and solve it.

Step 1: Make sure that the lighting fixture is powered. Check the switch to ensure that it's on, and also examine the breaker to verify that the area isn't tripped.

Step 2 - Examine the fluorescent light bulbs to make sure that nothing is broken. If any are not working, then they have to be replaced. Once again switch on the power and see if the new light bulbs in the fixture turn on.

When it comes to a multi-bulb fixture if one bulb is out it is best to replace all since extra strain on the new bulb.

Step 3 - Examine the light bulb socket. You should look for breaks and cracks, which do happen because of things like overheating. If the socket is really broken, the best thing to consider is buying a new fixture to solve the problem.

Step 4: Examine the fixture's power. You'll need a circuit tester to do this, which you can find at your friendly neighborhood hardware store.

Step 5 - If it is worth the costs, then replace the ballast instead of the entire fixture. This is relatively easy to do for someone with basic knowledge of electronic components.

While a fluorescent light fixture certainly is a wise investment, you may need to do some minor maintenance. These easy steps will ensure that the fixture won't leave you in the dark-for long! - 29956

Advantages Of Expert Property Marketing

By James L Harrison

Real estate market is just like a stock market where the rates can increase or decrease very rapidly. When the markets cool down, it is very hard to find a buyer. When you cant find buyers, it is strenuous to sell homes, although some homes still get sold. The question is that why some homes are sold and others dont get any attention. The answer is not what the real estate agents assert, that the home itself is not in a good condition to be sold so easily. The true reason is poor marketing efforts.

We live in a world taken over by the internet. Today everything is possible over the internet and people consult it to do everything. You can find your way around while travelling, get weather forecasts, plan your holidays and make all the bookings. Everything from business to personal is being done online and now buyers and sellers are taking help from the internet to take care of property related issues.

A survey conducted by the National Association of Realtors shows that 75% of people now look for property online. The number of houses for sale is increasing everyday and the only way you can sell your house now is if the buyers know you are selling.

The current state of real estate market suggests that you should have a good e-marketing plan as part of your overall marketing strategy. There are hundreds of thousands of homes for sale and the buyers dont have enough time to see every single home by paying a visit. A technology savvy real estate agent should use the following ways, as a good market plan, to sell property.

Buyers consider first impression as a vital factor in the final decision so a seller should always remember this while making a marketing plan. Buyers have many options enabling them to be choosy to get the best. You have to pay special attention to things anyone would notice at first sight, things like paint, maintenance, and presentation. This will increase your chances of successfully selling the property immediately.

You can describe a lot through pictures, way more than through words. Once your house is ready with all the details taken care of, its time to get it photographed. You should always acquire a professional photographer to get the best results. In case a photographer cannot be hired, make sure, the camera being used is a good panoramic one. Panoramic cameras can display all the rooms and even make them look more specious than in real. Having a gorgeous house is not going to help you if you do not post quality pictures on the internet. Descriptions lacking the spirit and pictures not having the liveliness will kill the chances of your successful sale.

You can always join hands with your agents to form a list of all the features of the house along with an attractive description for each feature. These days virtual tours have become important. Some of the buyers eliminate all the houses without virtual tours. You can have a virtual tour of 60 degree that can help convince the buyer to pick your house.

All these methods are going to help you get more exposure for your property, but dont think internet marketing is going to fix all your problems like magic. Other more traditional methods like open house and marketing through real estate agency will still play an important role and should continue alongside. - 29956

Selecting Contemporary Living Room Furniture

By Leroy Dyrnal

Living rooms are the often the first thing people see when they come to your house. Choosing contemporary living room furniture can showcase off any living room with a simple elegance and sophistication that no other type of furniture can give you.

Sofas and loveseats are the mainstays of a living room. Contemporary furniture offers a variety of these from dark, heavy geometrics in black and greys to the white leather and metal frame styles.

If you have room, sectional sofas are seen in many contemporary living rooms. While often in hide, they also come in a bevy of colours and neutrals, in addition to the standard black and whites. There are many styles here to choose from, from atomic styling of the rounded couches, to the more associated edgy styles. Some of these have backs that can be taken off and built in tables and lamps.

If space and utilization is more of what you need, there are also convertible sofas. A modern take on the hide-a-bed, these are often sought for their flexibility in the room. While futons are a type of these, contemporary styles offer a more visually pleasing form of these. Generally, these will be less intricate then the earlier ones, it is no less attractive for it.

Arm chairs are where the modern look is more readily recognized. These are featured from the satellite chair many know as contemporary furniture, to chairs that look futuristic in design. Your living room can host metals, natural and man made materials, textiles and create a centrepiece of the living room with them, because many of these transcend the ordinary and go into an imaginative territory only bound by your tastes.

No modern living room is complete without the entertainment centre and the coffee table. Everything is offered from lacquer, glass and metal to wood stands. Shapes can vary somewhat, from curved tables to chrome and asymmetrical shelving. Frequently, both of these are streamlined designs to suit the use as well as lend to the overall atmosphere to the modern room.

There is furniture for any price point, and it can include any shade you choose to make your living room in. The main thing to do is to opt for styles of furniture that are made in a mix of materials and fit the look of the modern living room. - 29956

The Basics Relating to Waterproof Digital Camera Housing

By Randy Rushmore

If you would like to put your digital camera to good use and love to be near the water, then it is a wise move to buy a waterproof digital camera housing. A housing is a product that is designed to prevent salt water from damaging an underwater camera. It is also a useful tool for preventing accidental damage to the equipment.

You will find many waterproof digital camera housing units available on the internet. These are generally priced cheaper than on the high street and are usually delivered directly at no extra cost. The amount you can expect to pay for a product of this type can vary. It could be as little as $50 or as much as $600.

It should be noted that a waterproof digital camera housing unit is not a universal product. That is to say that certain brands of unit will only be compatible with certain makes of camera. For example, you may find that certain housing units are only suitable for certain types of scuba camera. This fact may affect which products you can buy and how much you will have to pay for them.

If indeed you are intending to purchase accessories for a scuba camera or regular digital camera, you will find a host of information available among the online community. There are plenty of websites and forums dedicated to the art of underwater photography and you can get a lot of great advice from these places.

If you take the decision to buy a waterproof digital camera housing unit, then it is of paramount importance that it is correctly maintained. On receiving the product, place your camera inside, seal it and place it into a basin of water. If you can see any tiny bubbles escaping then the housing unit is damaged and ineffective. If at all feasible, repeat this test before actually going on a real dive.

The O Rings, which are an important part of keeping the waterproof digital camera housing sealed correctly, should be checked for any foreign matter and particles such as sand and dust. These elements can cause the unit to form a small leak which gets worse over time.

It is also advisable to take your digital or scuba camera along with the unit to a professional technician once in a while. He can give it a good going over and make sure that it is in good working order.

By taking on a hobby or job such as underwater photography, it is vital that you purchase equipment that is up for every challenge. After you have these products, it is recommended that they are kept protected. And one of the best ways to do this is to also purchase a waterproof digital camera housing product. - 29956

Now is a Great Time to Refinance

By Frank Jenkins

In an economy like this a lot of people are looking for ways to save money each month. One really easy way to do this is to refinance a car loan you already have.

Basically, a new lender will simply pay off the old one, and the interested party will set up a new contract through the new lender, obviously with less of a monthly payment. By finding a lender with a better rate you save money in the long run.

It's always a good idea to look at a handful of companies so that you can find the best deal available. You'll want to gather your financial information and know something about your credit history so you can get an accurate quote from the different lenders you consider.

Depending on which lender is chosen, a succession of fees may be requested before the new contract can be initiated: this may be a lender's fee, possible registration fees of some kind, and perhaps pre-payment, but usually the latter is insubstantial as far as cost is concerned.

Next, the new contract or submission needs to be approved by the lender, which usually takes very little time, and soon after the previous lender's contract will be bought out, thereby initiating the new deal.

So why does it make sense to refinance a car loan? Here are a few reasons why. First of all, many car owners are paying more for a car than it's really worth. If this is the case, you should consider looking into a refinance.

Just a quick side note on this: if you bought your car at a dealership you may have a harder time negotiating your way into a refinance. Some dealers are harder to work with this way, but it's still worth a shot.

Finally, the interest rate can be dropped immensely upon negotiating a new deal with a refinancing company. Always do your homework to make sure you're getting a deal that saves you money in the end.

When you refinance a car loan you have an opportunity to spend less on your current car payment. This can give you extra money to put towards other debts or savings. Or, if you keep making the same payment you'll pay your loan off even quick than you would have with your old loan. - 29956

Causes And Prevention For Roof Damage

By Darin Copeland

Mainly three factors are responsible for Roof damage. They are age, neglect and natural calamities. We are not in a position to prevent the age factor as ageing is the law of Nature. Negligence is something which we can avoid by being systematic. But we human beings take things for granted, though we tend to pay the price enormously later. The result of neglect would be seepages, moisture attack, mildew etc. The vagaries of nature are another factor in front of which we are helpless. Billions of dollars are lost annually due to this.

Proper roof maintenance can prevent roof damage to a great extent. Being the most prominent physical part of your home, it is exposed to sleet, winds, heat etc constantly. The proverb 'one stitch in time can save nine' is completely true in the case of roofs. If you overlook a dimpled shingle, a defaced tile or a clogged vent, the damage may spread to the entire superstructure resulting in untold miseries to you. So it is always better to keep a constant watch on how your roof is responding to forces of nature or ageing process.

Among all the natural forces, hailstorms are the biggest threats to your roof. Often it can also happen that the damages are not so easily visible that you overlook them. Nearby trees sometimes cause roof damage with their falling branches spoiling the roofing material. The vents can get blocked easily due to fallen leaves and other debris from the trees. This prevents proper ventilation.

Mildew and moisture also can slowly deteriorate the roofing without getting noticed. Even a flock of pigeons can cause minimal damages to your roof.

Roof made of asphalt, if taken care of properly can last up to fifteen years. Those made of materials like clay, tile, slate etc can even last longer. The durability of the roof depends on the attitude and enthusiasm of the owner. If he inspects the roof occasionally and does the necessary things to maintain it, its durability increases. Otherwise the need of frequent replacements arises out of deterioration. It is really worth while to get the help of an expert roofer to inspect your roof periodically to assess and report the damages. If the roofer is reliable you can rest assured that your roof is safe. - 29956

Is It Possible That There Is An ADHD Fish Oil Link?

By Peter Bertonach

Is there someone in your family with ADHD? Fish oil may well provide an answer. Although it has not been conclusively proven it seems that using fish oil for ADHD relief may well be useful.

ADHD, or what is otherwise known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, affects about 7 percent of children in the US. Most of these are boys and somewhere around 70 percent continue to adulthood suffering from ADHD. Omega 3 fatty acids have in many studies been shown to be important for the development of the fetal brain and also as a partial treatment for the symptoms of depression and there is now evidence emerging that using fish oil for ADHD treatment may be useful.

Studies on ADHD sufferers have shown that they have very low levels of Omega 3 fatty acids (essential fatty acids) in their bodies. In particular the 2 most important essential fatty acids are the Omega 3 fats called DHA and EPA. These are found primarily in fish, fish oil and for our purposes, in supplements made with fish oil.

The Inflammation Research Foundation has concluded a study recently done on 3 boys and 6 girls, all of which had been diagnosed with symptoms of ADHD. The symptoms are, amongst others, an inability to focus on any task over a period of time and such disruptive behaviour as hyperactivity.

High levels of fish oil supplements were given to each of the children over 8 weeks. During that time levels of Omega 3 fatty acids in their bodies were monitored and a study also monitored various factors indicating the degree to which their ADHD had changed.

During the 8 weeks their levels of EPA and DHA increased significantly and the indicators of the degree of ADHD will sell. Their hyperactivity score fell to less than half, from 11 to 5. Their inattention school fell from 18 to 10. These are impressive results for sufferers of ADHD. Omega 3 supplementation seems to have worked to reduce their symptoms of ADHD.

Of course it's still too early to state that using fish oil for ADHD treatment can be used as a treatment on its own. But it does seem that there is clear evidence that using fish oil for ADHD relief is well worth investigating. It seems there is clear signs of an ADHD fish oil link.

It is also as yet not clear what dosage of fish oil is appropriate for ADHD sufferers. In the study dosage levels were high, higher than is generally recommended.

But there is now little doubt that just about everyone in the US should be taking Omega 3 fish oil supplements, not just sufferers of ADHD. Omega 3 supplements benefit our health in a wide range of ways, including, it seems, in improving our mental state. It seems that adequate levels of essential fatty acids in our body to have an impact on conditions such as depression and ADHD.

For a wide range of different reasons children with ADHD ought to be increasing their intake of Omega 3 essential fatty acids both to improve their general health and their ADHD.

Remember though that not all fish oil supplements are the same and that some have much higher levels of DHA and EPA than others do, and that therefore some offer much better value than others.

Visit my website to find out how you can compare the different Omega 3 fish oil capsules available on the market. - 29956

The Christmas Magic Of Childhood

By Ellie Evergreen

Ring. Ring. "Hello." "Son, it?s for you!" Can you imagine his face when he picks up the phone to find Santa? He?d want to call all his friends that he got a Santa call. Santa phone calls are just one of the many things we do for children during the holidays. We all want them to have a magical experience. We do them not just at Christmas but at other holidays as well. We work hard to build a world of safety and magic that childhood should be.

We can be reasonably sure that there are no large, jolly elves that fly around once a year on domesticated reindeer live at the North Pole on a street called Santa Lane. None the less we tell children that there is such an elf. Once a year, in the middle of the night, we stuff gifts under a recently slaughtered tree. We drink the milks and eat the cookies that had been left for him. Kids watch parades with him in it and even see him at the mall (don?t take the kids to two malls in one day, too many questions!). We are creating the magical world of childhood. Santa is the biggest example but hardly the only one. They exist in all sorts of ways in all sorts of seasons.

To stay in winter for a bit there is Frosty the Snowman. He got so ingrained in our child-magic world that we named a tasty treat after him. Can you honestly say when you make a snow man that you don?t use 3 balls of snow and look for a carrot? And if you have a stove top hat and a corn cob pipe you know you are going to use them. As we move into spring and Frosty melts away we come across another denizen of the child?s world of imagination. This time it is a large bunny that loves to leave candy and is OCD about hiding brightly colored chicken eggs.

With those spring showers come rainbows and we tell the children about the pot of gold that the leprechauns have hidden at the end of it. Face it, we have all chased a rainbow. Then you have the dreaded tooth snatching demon. Sorry, I mean the tooth fairy but adults play it up. If you leave the tooth under your pillow the tooth fairy will take it and leave you money.

Next comes fall and Halloween. It?s not just about ghost and goblins but hay rides too. All the excitement of trying to be scary and picking out the right costume has the children squirming. Parents, trying to keep the child?s magic world alive, try to be scary but not too scary and give the little ones nightmares (a thin line to walk). And those are just the ones that everybody knows. Each community has them as well as does each family. It is all a parents? way of creating a magical little world, even something small. Some children in the country grew up thinking the yellow lines on the side of the road keep the grass from growing into the road. There are stories in the Bayou about what lives in the swamp. In the end the folks that see Big Foot and UFO?s probably kept a little of that childhood world alive.

So all and all, Santa leads the way for all of us back to our childhood. That?s why we love being the man behind the curtain (Wizard of Oz). - 29956

Arm yourself with as much information on homeschooling as you can find so you can make a well-informed choice in regards to your child's education. Homeschooling has many advantages over the traditional public schools. But there can be just as many pitfalls also.

Homeschooling Is Not For Everyone The first thing about homeschooling that every parent should understand is that it is not for everybody. Your child may actually do better academically in the public schools. Or you may not have the time needed to properly educate your child. Try to keep all peer pressure, both yours and your child's, out of the picture and determine what is truly best for your family.

Take A Good Look At Your Child How does your child learn best? Is it through reading, visual instruction, verbal instruction? Does your child need to feel with his hands to understand a concept? Some children do best with one or two methods. Others need more methods.

Find what suites your child best and tailor the curriculum around teaching that way. You will find your child enjoys school much more and it will be easier on you.

How Do You Know What To Teach? This can be a very difficult step in homeschooling, as there are multitudes of curriculum available. Some curriculum packages as complete, others allow you to pick and choose subject areas.

If your decision to homeschool is based on your religious convictions, you should work with your church. They should be able to recommend suitable curriculum, or may even have their own.

Can My Child Still Go To College? Many homeschooled children go on to college. However, whether your child can get admitted depends a lot upon the parent. You must start investigating around 9th grade what the entrance requirements are for the types of colleges your child wants to go to. Then you base your curriculum choices around those requirements. You should also have very good record keeping of your child's curriculum. Of course, they must still pass whatever entrance exams (i.e. SAT or ACT) the college requires. But with some forethought and planning, a college education is every bit a reality for the homeschooled child as it is the public/private schooled child.

Know Your State Laws Before starting on the road to homeschooling, investigate your state's particular education laws - the internet should have all the information you will need. Find out things such as what constitutes a school year, how many hours are in a school day, and the required record keeping that is needed. Also, will you have to ill out a declaration of intent to home study each year?

Summary Gathering more information on homeschooling should be your starting point. Find out what type of curriculum you want to teach and what your state laws are for homeschooling. Look for different teaching methodologies so you can try them on your child for optimum learning. The more you know about your homeschooling possibilities, the better you can customize your child's education. - 29956
