By Luke Jefferson

Basically, a stopwatch is a hand held device that measures time and it is most often used for sports and exercise programs. People can use them as timers if they have to oversee an event where duration and length are important. All athletes can benefit from a stopwatch and that regardless of whether it is to be used for races, ball sports or even gymnastics.

The most common type of stopwatch for sports activities happens to be the one used for Track & Field Athletics. A watch of this type has the ability to time up to 1/100th of a second as well as in specific minutes to seconds. Memory functions are also a common feature so that an athlete or trainer can recall lap records and other cumulative lap times. Usage of this is most common in exercises or training regimens.

For the most part watches for running are to be worn on the wrist. This makes them perfect for athletes who do exercising on their own or private training. The majority of models also have programs that do calculations which makes it easier for athletes or coaches to evaluate things like average speed or the time for a certain distance.

Cycling stopwatches are made for athletes who compete in cycling events and enable them to time the average speed for a specific distance. These stopwatches are mostly used by coaches and athletes serious about cycling, because with this stopwatch they can save in the memory a series of segments in split time.

The stopwatch isn't only made for humans. It can also be used to time the speed of animals such as dogs and horses. The equestrian stopwatch is designed for horse racing. Some of these types have large displays for easier reading during practice or exercise sessions. A horse driver can use this stopwatch to gauge the speed and rate during the actual run.

Another type of stopwatch is also used to time in inanimate objects such as cars and motorcycles. It's called the motor sport stopwatch. Some designs offer a lot of features that makes it highly convenient to use such as the any-time data capture button. Other stopwatches of this kind have triple displays to allow for better reading.

Another specific type of stopwatch is the Sailing Watch. This type has added features such as being waterproof as well as a pre-start countdown option. This stopwatch has been specifically designed to be used mainly by sailboat and speedboat racers.

Other watches are also used for educational purposes such as the Scientific Stopwatch and Work Study Stopwatch. These are purely designed for classrooms or research laboratories to clock how much time is needed for any given experiment to produce results.

A stopwatch isn't just designed to clock in high speed and distance measurements. There are also some watches that are designed for outdoor pursuits such as walking and orienteering. There are also training watches that clock in exercise or training hours. These stopwatches ensure that you can have enough rest after a specific time. However, the main use of a stopwatch is certainly for sports activities. - 29956
