Bold Colors Put Pizzazz In The Kitchen

By Phil Paterson

The kitchen is the room used a lot but gets the least attention. White appliances and a functional flooring is all there is. This look is plain and boring.

Today homes are getting a new look in the kitchen. Because of the emphasis on kitchen decor families are gathering more in the kitchen.

So why is this room so appealing to everyone? Designers think that a kitchen's ambiance depends on its colors. If you have a kitchen that has vibrant colors then you the room attracts people. But you need to recognize the basics of the kitchen and use that to build a look for your kitchen.

For instance, most appliances are white, black or stainless steel. Kitchens also don't have a lot of open wall space. For these reasons, designers suggest putting some bold color on the walls that will complement the dominant colors of the appliances.

Darker wood or paint colors for cabinets have come into style for kitchens. This means that deeper hues of wall colors will hold up against them. Some designers like the warmth of shades traditional to Mexican arts and crafts -- copper, ginger, henna and gold. In addition, these bold colors are popping up in surprising places, such as a burnt-orange countertop around a stainless steel sink.

Traditional colors are important and in style as well. Red, yellow, and apricot are some of the more warm colors. These colors are now being used in different ways. If you want a country-style kitchen color choose green and pink but make them a rustic green with a strawberry shade of pink instead.

As the world continues to get smaller, ethnic influences also are showing up more and more in kitchen decor. Color forecasters are predicting that just as India is becoming a major player in the global marketplace, its cultural colors such as oranges and yellows are making inroads in home decorating. Chinese reds also are gaining ground, thanks in part to the influence of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the Chinese tradition that red is the color of good luck.

What makes these ethnic trends chic? Designers say it isn't just the colors, but the way they're combined in new ways that gives the combinations greater sophistication. Burnt orange could be paired with brilliant blue, or deep purple with a more subdued yellow. Neutrals such as dark brown and shades of gray from soft dove to deep charcoal are providing interesting accents to many bold color stylings in the kitchen.

Now that we know what colors are in which colors are out? Pay attention to the color schemes in your favorite restaurant. If it is shades of terracotta it could be Mexican or Tuscan style. Basically don't overuse the color schemes in a commercial restaurant and establishments.

Instead, give your kitchen some pizzazz with bold new colors in your kitchen cabinets as well as your curtains and area rugs. - 29956
