How I Started My Doll Collection

By Caryn Volecci

I loved Cabbage Patch Dolls, Strawberry Shortcake and Barbie when I was young. During the eighties, my Mom and other relatives would spend hours waiting for them to go on sale at local stores. I always ended up getting one of my favorites when Christmas arrived. Some of these dolls have gone on to be collector's items.

I also remember hearing about all the fights in the stores that the mothers, aunts and grandmothers would get into at the stores, trying to get that perfect doll for the special girl in their life. I was fortunate that nothing so dramatic happened during the purchase of my gifts. Some people did lose perspective however in their quest to get the doll their child wanted.

I think one of the things that made these dolls fun to play with was all the accessories. I would play with my dolls for hours. I still have one of the cabbage dolls and the strawberry shortcake doll. You can still smell the strawberry scent on the strawberry shortcake doll. I have them in my curio cabinet now. My 4 yr old daughter enjoys looking at them. When she gets older(much older) I am going to pass them on to her.

Another favorite doll is the Barbie doll. As a child, I enjoyed playing with Malibu Barbie and the ken doll as well. I enjoyed the fashionable clothes and shoes for Barbie. I could spend hours changing her outfits and accessories. I also like to style the doll's hair. Barbies of course offer a great variety in hair styles.

The most exciting gift I received was the Barbie with her own red sports car. Barbie is a lovely doll for girls of all ages. In addition, in our new day and age you can have a Barbie doll created to look they way you want them to look. Many young girls ruin the value of their dolls by "customizing" them with either makeup or by cutting their hair. Both of these things should be avoided.

I plan on passing my Barbie dolls down to my own family. Many of the dolls though do have some nice collectible value. There are a lot of people who sell their vintage Barbies on places like eBay for a nice profit. Although I've kept mine in very nice condition, I am just to attached to them to want to sell them.

The early eighties were a big time for Cabbage Patch dolls. My collection of these dolls was started when I got swept up in the frenzy to get one. My first one had dark brown curly hair. She was soon followed by a boy Cabbage Patch with no hair at all! My friends and I often babysat together as we played with all of our collected dolls.

Although some doll collections can be worth a lot of money, I collect for the fun of it. My memories of times spent playing with and collecting my dolls are strong and I enjoy them quite a bit. I hope as my children grow, I will be able to pass this love and appreciation of dolls on to them. Doll collecting is a wonderful hobby for anyone. - 29956
