Benefits of an Electronic Dog Door

By Robin Geffen

An electronic dog door is powered by batteries, by connecting it to an electrical outlet, or by a mix of both. This type of door uses high technology in oder to make life easier for the dog and its owner. It is designed to open only to the dog that is wearing a collar that the door can recognize through its detectors. This will prevent other dogs or animals and even potential burglars from going into your house. Naturally, these types of automatic dog doors are more expensive, but their benefits justify it.

Unlike regular pet doors, automatic pet doors will let your dog come in and go out whenever it wants, but unlike regular pet doors, they will not only keep other animals out, but also water from rain and dust from the street. Also, while both types of pet doors let your dog inside, only the electronic pet door will close after your dog is inside, which might save it from other dogs or cruel children.

How These Doors Work

Although they can vary a bit from manufacturer to manufacturer, these doors usually work in the same way. The dog has to wear a collar, which in turn emits an infrared or a magnetic frequency; this frequency can be picked up by the door's sensors and it causes the door to open.

Whether the dog comes from inside or outside the house, the door will open for the pet and then it will lock itself again. Some models also include a remote control which allows the owner to open and close the door and leave it like that, regardless of the dog's movements.

It is interesting to know that a electronic pet door's sensors can tell the difference in size between a dog and a person, and thus won't open to burglars.

Price

Price will not only depend on the material and size of the automatic dog door, but also on the number of features it has, with prices ranging from $40 to up to $700.

Extra features include several locking modes and aesthetic designs. - 29956
