Choosing Upholstery Cleaners Can Be Stressful

By Joanne Anderson

Of all the decisions in a persons life, deciding on upholstery cleaners is probably pretty close to the bottom of the list. But it takes some time and research to make these decisions in an educated manner. Unfortunately most people just go to the store and pick up a can that says "Upholstery Cleaner" and think that is the end of it.

You have to first determine what kind of upholstery needs to be cleaned. Then you have to decide just how much work and money you want to invest in the process. When all these decisions have been made you are down to deciding on products.

You have products that pre-treat stains - such as ink or grease. You have products that remove coffee, tea, and soda. You can remove dye, rust, gum, adhesives, oil, food, and blood. Each of these takes a different chemical or combination of chemicals to remove. And don't forget those nasty pet stains.

If you don't have leather then you have any number of cleaners to choose from. First you need to decide on pre-treatment for stains and odors. You have stain removers for grease, oil, rust, blood, dye, gum, adhesives, coffee, tea, soda, ink, and many other stains including those yucky pet stains.

After those choices have been made I have to know whether or not I need to pre-treat for stains. There are products to remove oil and grease, ink, rust, blood, coffee, tea, soda, food, dyes and just about anything else you can think of. There are also pet spot removers. Check out the furniture and determine what kind of spots are on it.

Choosing upholstery cleaners can turn out to be a major decision if you choose the wrong products. You can ruin your furniture by leaving it spotted or with holes in it, or smelling bad. Or harm your family or pets if it is the wrong chemical mixture.

What about the odors? There are odor removing products for pet odors, cooking odors, and smoke odors. Which ones of these will I need? Which ones can be used with the pre-treatment for stains and the cleaners I have chosen? Which ones actually neutralize the odors and which ones just cover it up for while. More research and more decisions has to be done.

You can invest as little or as much as you want in effort, products, and money to clean your upholstery. You decide which products you feel comfortable with and which ones do the job to suit you. There are many to choose from with good results from many years of being used. Just be sure you use them properly so as to keep your home safe for you and your family. After all, the whole reason for cleaning the upholstery is so you and your family can sit on it and enjoy it. - 29956
