Use of Bedbug Sprays

By Renee Garcia

Do you have bedbugs at home? If you do, you must first identify the site of infestation. How can you do this?

First, observe the time when you had the bite marks. Where did you lie down that time? Once you already know which room, you now have to look for the insects themselves. Check the mattress and sofa first. These are the usual habitats of bedbugs. Then check any furniture that is near the infested mattress or sofa. Look for cracks or crevices. You may see an adult bedbug or a nymph.

Bedbugs that are around 4-5 mm in length with reddish-brown, flat, oval bodies are the adult forms. The adults are wingless and their bodies look banded.

Another type of bedbugs is the immature nymph. Compared to adults, nymphs are lighter, translucent, and smaller. Now that you have identified the insects and the site of infestation, you can do two things to get rid of them. You can either call an exterminator, or you can go to the store to buy a bedbug spray.

There are insecticides formulated to kill bedbugs. These come in spray or dust form. Some are even formulated to be less toxic and environment-friendly.

In choosing a bedbug spray, you must first know if this can be used on the materials that your furniture is made from. There are some bedbug sprays that can be used on wood only. And others are for mattresses only. But still, some bedbug sprays can be used on any material.

In starting the treatment, scrub then vacuum all the surfaces of the infested area. Dispose of the vacuum bag inside a plastic bag to make sure that no bedbug will be transferred anywhere else.

After you have scrubbed and vacuumed the infested furniture, you can now apply the insecticide. Before application, make sure that you read the instructions carefully. Follow the instructions for application properly and make sure if re-treatment is needed or not. There are many types of bedbug sprays that are available in the market today. The common ones are Allethrin, Pyrethrins, Malathion, and Tempo. - 29956
